Who does the growing

Tending a rooftop growing site is skilled, steady, local work. We create those roles specifically for people with disabilities, and we train people into them.

The work

The roles
Growing and harvesting a rooftop site is a real job with a real wage, not a placement. The people who do it are on our staff.
The training
Nobody is expected to arrive knowing how to run a soil-free growing system. We train people into the work, and the sites are designed around the people who tend them.
Why this work
The sites are small, close together, and in the neighbourhoods people already live in. The work is regular and the routine is stable — which is what makes it hold, where a scheme built on goodwill does not.

In the neighbourhood

Most people in a city have never seen food growing. Our sites sit on top of the buildings they live in, so we open them: we show neighbours what is growing, how it grows, and what it takes. A city that understands where its food comes from asks better questions of everyone who sells it.
